OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Model
The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model:
The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual model that describes how communications should take place between different devices in a computer network. It is made up of seven layers, each of which performs a specific function in the process of sending and receiving data. These layers are:
- Physical Layer:
- This layer is responsible for transmitting raw data over a communication channel, such as a copper wire or fiber optic cable. It defines the physical characteristics of the communication channel, such as the type of cable, connectors, and signaling methods used.
- Data Link Layer:
- This layer is responsible for providing reliable communication between devices on a single link, such as a point-to-point connection or a local area network (LAN). It ensures that data is transmitted correctly by adding error checking and retransmission of lost or corrupted data.
- Network Layer:
- This layer is responsible for routing data between different devices on a network. It determines the best path for data to take based on network conditions, and it also provides logical addressing so that devices can be identified on the network.
- Transport Layer:
- This layer is responsible for ensuring reliable and efficient data transmission between devices. It provides error checking, flow control, and segmentation of data into smaller units for easier transmission.
- Session Layer:
- This layer is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and terminating communication sessions between devices. It enables devices to establish a connection, exchange data, and then close the connection when finished.
- Presentation Layer:
- This layer is responsible for converting data into a format that can be understood by the application layer. It may involve formatting, encryption, and compression of data.
- Application Layer:
- This layer is the highest layer in the OSI model and is responsible for interacting with the user and providing network services to applications. It provides the interface between the network and the application, allowing the application to access the network and communicate with other devices.
Each layer in the OSI model communicates with the layer above and below it using a specific set of protocols. These protocols define the rules and standards that must be followed for communication to take place between different devices in a network.
